The flight attendant has debunked some common myths about airplanes while revealing the truth about in-flight drinking.
Virgin Australia flight attendant Brodie Capron has shared a TikTok where she answers the most common questions she is asked, from whether water is protected to drink, why you’re feeling more drunk in the air and where toilet waste really goes.
Ms. Capron, who has been in the industry for 2 years, often shares her experiences, and her latest clip has amassed half 1,000,000 views.
Rumors have long circulated about the alleged poor quality of drinking water in airplanes, and its safety is a much-discussed topic.
Some say you must only drink from a sealed bottle, but Brodie said it was indeed “protected to drink” – at the very least on her flights.
“It’s filtered and clean,” she said.
As for drinking alcohol, a Virgin crew member said to watch out how much you drink as you get more drunk on the plane, which few people realize.
“[It’s] because of the lower oxygen content in the air, the effects of alcohol are stronger,” she explained.
“So make certain you make good decisions when flying.”
Angus Kidman, a travel expert at Finder, confirmed that because of lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes, passengers can really feel the effects of alcohol.
“So once you get on a plane, your body already has to work hard to compensate,” he told news.com.au.
“It’s busy making extra red blood cells, and once you add alcohol to that, it could cause problems ahead of should you were drinking on the ground.
“Altitude sickness and a hangover should not a fun combination.”
He said persons are different and a few do significantly better than others.
“But chances are high you are not David Boon and you possibly can’t handle dozens of beer cans on a long-haul flight,” Kidman said.
“Realistically, it’s not possible that the crew will offer them to you anyway, unless you are in firstclass.”
A Finder poll conducted in December 2021 found that just about one in five (17 per cent) Australians were drunk on a plane, with 2 per cent – nearly 390,000 people – admitting to stealing their very own drinks.
“Even should you’re in party mode, make certain you drink loads of water,” Kidman said.
“And eat some food from the plane.” It’s good to rejoice while flying, but do not forget that you are in a shared space. Moderation is a sensible flight policy.”
In the meantime, Ms Capron also answered other incessantly asked questions, similar to why window blinds should be up during take-off and landing.
“So that everybody can see the engines and alert the cabin crew if something is unsuitable,” she said.
For many who wonder if poop and pee might be discarded in the air, the answer isn’t any.
“It falls right into a sump, and upon landing it’s emptied.”
As for why passengers have to placed on oxygen masks first, Ms Capron said that is in order that they might help others later because “you will not be of much use should you do not have oxygen with you.”
And for those wondering if the door will be opened mid-flight, Brodie said no.
“The door can’t be opened mid-flight unless you might have superhuman strength,” she said.
In 2017, a person reportedly tried to open the exit door of a plane on a Delta Air Lines flight from Seattle to Beijing, Yahoo reported.
The flight attendant smashed a wine bottle over the man’s head, and the passenger was arrested when the plane was forced to show back to Seattle.
Based on Live Scienceeven when the man were left alone, he would must use greater than 23,589 kilos of force to open the door – the equivalent of lifting almost two African elephants.
