The Knicks won their first playoff series in what felt like an eternity.
They’d a star at the peak of his profession, a player who broke recent history by selecting Latest York and immediately raised the ceiling of the team.
They’d a strong supporting solid spanning size, strength, athleticism and shooting. They’d countless reasons to imagine that the first breakthrough was only the starting.
Sounds familiar?
In some ways, the current Knicks mirror the team from the 2012-13 season, responsible for the club’s lone playoff win over the last decade before a first-round win over Cleveland this season.
Carmelo Anthony, then 28, led the league in scoring and finished third in MVP voting. JR Smith was named the sixth man of the 12 months. Mike Woodson finished third in the Coach of the 12 months voting. The team, which also included Amar’e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Iman Shumpert and Jason Kidd, went 54-28, won their only league title in the series since 1994, and finished second.
After defeating the Celtics in the playoffs for the first time in 13 years, the Knicks entered the second round as home-court favorites – sound familiar? — expects to fight LeBron James Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.
But a season stuffed with so many exciting nights and remarkable performances was reduced to Roy Hibbert’s block after Anthony’s dunk attempt late in Game 6, turning the momentum towards the Pacers, who soon closed the series at home.
“To get to the point where we had a probability to make it to the conference finals, we’ll reap the benefits of that,” said Anthony. “It’s a learning curve for us and we’ll definitely come back higher and stronger next 12 months.”
In the end, they came upon that they wasted their best opportunity. The long run was suffering from rubble.
Hopes for the next season were high. The Knicks even dared to speak about the title. As a substitute, they went 37–45, which sent Anthony out of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, and it was the first time in seven straight years that the Knicks failed to achieve the postseason.
Now the Knicks are back in the playoffs for the second time in three years, having thus far made up for the 2021 first round against the Hawks. Now they’ve their best probability since facing Indiana 10 years ago.
This second-round series began with the visiting Pacers stealing the game at the Garden. The Knicks responded with a victory before heading out of town for the crucial Game 3. The Knicks lost back-to-back games in Indiana by double figures.
On Saturday, the Knicks will attempt to take control of a tied series with the Heat in Game 3 in Miami. It could possibly be years – perhaps a long time – before the Knicks have a higher path to the Eastern Conference Finals, which they last reached in 2000 (the NBA’s third-longest conference final).
As a substitute of facing the top seeded Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Knicks unexpectedly faced the eighth seed with 25 points.pNo. 1 in the NBA, losing its top scorer (Tyler Herro) to a broken arm in the 1st inning, and its top pick (Jimmy Butler) suffering an ankle injury in the 2nd inning which ruled him out of the 2nd round in Latest York.
On the other side of the East Bracket, 76ers star Joel Embiid is limping, and the Celtics – who lost three out of 4 games to the Knicks in the regular season – have been disappointing.
Every thing is feasible. It should still feel that way. It should still be electrifying like the first six months of this unexpected ride, with Jalen Brunson’s constant brilliance, Julius Randle’s monster nights, Immanuel Quickley’s scoring spikes, the arrival of Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson’s blocks, and far more.
But how this season ends will determine how much joy will likely be sucked out of those memories. For many of the last 20 years, you’d have signed up for the second round of the playoffs. But circumstances have modified. Good is not any longer adequate. Not on this rare occasion.
Make the most and win the heart of the best basketball city in the world endlessly. Don’t make it past the second round and risk being remembered for one missed game.

By the time Justin Verlander made his first start with the Mets, he understood what most of the previous nine years had been like for Jacob deGrom.
Five weeks into the deadline, the Mets substitute ace returned from the injury list and made his long-awaited debut, losing Thursday in a 2-0 loss to the Tigers, who ended an embarrassing three-game run. . The Mets have now lost nine of their last 11 games and have been knocked out six times this season.
After fellow competitor Max Scherzer was banned from six runs in lower than 4 rounds on Wednesday, the 40-year-old Verlander couldn’t make it through the first round of his $86.67 million two-year contract – falling from his third Cy Young Award and second World Series Ring – no similar damage. After the lead clear, Riley Greene and Javier Baez took the right hand deep, leading back-to-back home runs.
Verlander soon settled down, allowing five hits and one walk while hitting five (79 pitches). The Mets’ offensive didn’t rebound, nonetheless, offering a deGrom treatment, recording a total of three hits.
Detroit’s Eduardo Rodriguez threw eight goalless innings. In case Steve Cohen was wondering, Rodgriguez has an option in his contract to opt out of the player after this season.
Crimson Tide meets the Black Sox
Lower than two weeks after five NFL players were suspended for violating the league’s gambling rules – the league said there was “no evidence to suggest any insider trading or that any game was compromised in any way” – Alabama baseball coach, Brad Bohannon, was fired Thursday after betting on Crimson Tide sparked red flags and prompted three states (Ohio, Latest Jersey, Pennsylvania) to suspend all bets on the team’s games.
In response to ESPN, sports betting surveillance video showed that the one that placed the bets was in communication with Bohannon at the time. Alabama said Bohannon was fired for “violating the standards, duties and responsibilities expected of university employees”
Bohannon, 47, who was hired by Alabama in 2017, was also accused of mistreatment by the former player in a lawsuit filed earlier this season for “denying medical care to a seriously injured player.”
Suspicious betting activity reportedly took place last Friday at the BetMGM bookmaker at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Given how little college baseball betting attracts — especially in late April — authorities were alerted to a large moneyline bet on LSU and one other significant bet — involving the Tigers in parliament — before it beat Alabama 8-6. About an hour before the game, Alabama’s starting pitcher Luke Holman was moved to the bench in favor of Hagan Banks.
The three-state freeze on all baseball betting in Alabama was the first time bookmakers had taken motion against a specific team since a May 2018 Supreme Court ruling that effectively legalized sports betting and led to just about three dozen states allowing This.
“As many states have moved to legalize sports gambling, we’re reminded of the dangers gambling can pose to competitive integrity,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement.
A few of it’s possible you’ll never feel comfortable with the marriage between sports leagues and bookmakers, annoyed, disgusted or disturbed by the gambling ads and sponsorships which have develop into a regular a part of every game.
But issues around “competitive fairness” remain outliers. The prevalence of sports gambling has not sparked concerns about fixing games. They were founded by scandals that happened way back. Black Sox. Pete Rose. CCNY. Boston College. Tim Donaghy.
Sports gambling has been thriving in Europe for a long time with no devastating impact on the core product. Professionals remain largely proof against short-sighted money grabs, making an excessive amount of money to risk their careers and reputations.
College athletes in high-profile sports are less vulnerable than ever given their ability to earn NIL at school. In lower-income college sports—not football or basketball—unprecedented surveillance and digital footprints make it easier to detect suspicious activity.
Incidents like the one in Alabama are inevitable. They existed when bookmakers were confined to Las Vegas, offshore and underground.
Alcohol shouldn’t be prohibited – thanks, 21st Fix – Though on average one American dies every 45 minutes in a drunk driving accident. Guns usually are not banned regardless that the United States is the only country on Earth with more guns than residents, with a record 48,830 Americans killed by guns in 2021.
Gambling is a headache infrequently, but the sports infrastructure – and athletes and players – is just too strong to be disrupted. Sport has survived much larger scandals. Do not be afraid.
