Rank-and-file liar and currently indicted Long Island congressman George Santos is a shame who should resign, said former congressman and Republican Recent York governor candidate Lee Zeldin.
Voters in District 3, which incorporates parts of Nassau County and eastern Queens, are “embarrassed” by the first-term congressman who’s now facing criminal fraud charges along with a pile of lies, Zeldin told The Post in an interview.
“Individuals who voted for him are more upset than those that didn’t vote for him,” he said.
“If I were him, I might resign.”
Zeldin said first-term House Republicans, who will certainly face tough re-election campaigns in swing districts, “don’t need or want” Santos’ distractions.
Democrats are already attempting to link their GOP opponents to Santos, who’s accused of misappropriating $50,000 of campaign money to purchase designer clothes and canopy personal expenses.
Federal prosecutors also allege that Santos, 34, cheated his way into COVID unemployment advantages and lied to Congress about financial disclosure forms claiming he was a millionaire, in response to 13 counts against him.
Santos, 34, pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance last week after which claimed he was the victim of a “witch hunt”. He was released on $500,000 bail.
Zeldin and Santos shared a treasurer, Nancy Marks.
Zeldin dismissed the next questions on Santos’ shady funds.
Santos didn’t immediately comment that Zeldin had joined the chorus of Republicans who say he should resign.
