[WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for the series finale of “Succession.”]
After 4 seasons, Succession has come to an end – and Waystar RoyCo has a recent CEO.
In the 90-minute series finale, creator Jesse Armstrong ended a string of conflicts, but ultimately got down to answer the query everyone has been asking since the first season premiered in 2018: Who will replace Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as CEO?
The ending could have gone a number of ways: Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) could have filled his father’s shoes – as Logan may or may not have desired to by taking a look at the underline/strike out on his whitepaper, Kendall and Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin) could have remained co-CEO, GoJo could take over Waystar with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) coming out on top and appointing Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) as CEO, together with many other possibilities.
Ultimately, the hole left by Logan Roy’s death could only be filled by one person.
Spoilers for season 4, episode 10, “With Eyes Open” are below, so stop scrolling now if you happen to don’t desire to know who won the crown.
Who is the recent CEO of Waystar RoyCo?
While it was at all times assumed that Logan Roy’s successor would come from a family lineage, this was not the case.
Neither Kendall, Roman, Shiv – nor Connor (Alan Ruck), for that matter – have change into heirs to the media mogul’s throne.
After Matsson decided that he was not going to appoint Shiv as CEO of the company, an unsuspecting person informed her who it will be.
“Shiv, you must probably know: it’s me,” Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) told his wife.
What happened to the GoJo deal?
As mentioned above, Greg came upon by translating the conversation into Swedish that Matsson wasn’t actually planning on giving Shiv the CEO title as he had promised.
Upon learning that she was screwed, Shiv jumped back on board together with his brothers to dam GoJo’s deal.
But when it got here time to solid the votes at the board meeting, the rating was tied six-six, with Shiv as the tiebreaker. She left the room to take into consideration what she really wanted: to face behind her brothers or her husband and father of a toddler.
Ultimately, Shiv decides that Kendall isn’t as much as the job and tells him, “I really like you, I actually love you, but I can not fucking swallow you.” Roman agrees and every little thing falls apart for the siblings, bringing up the past and hitting one another where it hurts the most.
As Kendall and Roman fight over various past events – akin to Kendall’s involvement in the death of a waiter at Shiv’s wedding and Kendall’s adoptive children who’re technically not part of the “blood line” – Shiv goes and casts his vote for GoJo’s deal, putting Waystar in his hands Matsson.
Which of Roy’s siblings would change into CEO in the event that they blocked the deal?
As usual, for much of the episode, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv battled over which of them ought to be CEO of their particular plan to present to the board. All three shared that Logan had promised them a title and an organization in some unspecified time in the future.
After going forwards and backwards, Shiv and Roman determine they’ve a alternative between killing Kendall or giving him the CEO. They joke that murder is “an excessive amount of administrator”, in order that they determine that he will take over.
What will eventually occur to the Roy siblings?
The top of the episode shows Tom marching to Waystar as if he runs the place – because he does.
Back at the office, Tom guarantees his cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun), “I’ve got you”, essentially keeping him secure at the company.
As for the siblings, Shiv is seen driving away with Tom, strangely placing his hand over his as he offers his hand to carry. It’s assumed that their marriage will eventually survive they usually will eventually have a toddler together.
Roman lands at the martini bar, probably feeling his father’s weight lift off his shoulders.
And in the last shot of the entire series, Kendall – who told his siblings that if he doesn’t get company he thinks he “might die” – is walking through the park and sitting on a bench watching the sun go down during the day, he came upon that he won’t be CEO. Logan’s bodyguard, Colin (Scott Nicholson), follows him from afar, keeping track of him.
Kendall may not have gotten the company from his father, but he did get Colin – whom Logan called his “best friend” at the start of the season.
