In 1907, its busiest 12 months, 1,004,756 migrants arrived on Ellis Island.
In fiscal 12 months 2022, 2.76 million migrants were seen crossing the southern border – and that is just the ones we learn about.
This is a wave of immigration unprecedented in American history.
It is also illegal.
These migrants are usually not applying for green cards or legal residence. If that were the case, they might have to wait their turn before taking over residence in the United States. As a substitute, they were trained to seek asylum, a program designed for refugees facing political or religious persecution at home.
Many, if not all, of those migrants don’t qualify. But it’ll take five years of court hearings to figure that out, and until then they can be living here permanently, illegally, in blue cities and states that refuse to deport them.
As border towns face even larger caravans in the coming weeks, expect the administration and their media allies to claim that Republicans oppose “immigration reform” and “solutions” to the problem.
![This is an unprecedented scale of migration in the country.](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/border-col-6.jpg?w=1024)
It’s pure garbage. Because the definition of “reform” by the Democratic Party is a large amnesty for everybody already in the US and money to let much more in.
They emotionally appeal to the “Dreamers”, saying that they shouldn’t be answerable for parents who crossed the border illegally. But then the definition of Dreamer is also prolonged to these parents. And the ranks of the Dreamers grow exponentially every 12 months.
Consider the actions of the Latest York City Council progressives who tried to legalize voting for noncitizens. For them, there is no difference between legal and illegal immigrants, and even residents and non-residents. The border crisis, as they see it, is a paperwork crisis.
Also note the administration’s arguments before the Supreme Court to end Title 42, a directive that permits the Border Patrol to expel migrants under health protocols.
“The federal government recognizes that the end of Title 42 orders is likely to lead to disruption and a brief increase in illegal border crossings,” wrote Solicitor Elizabeth Prelogar. “The federal government is by no means trying to downplay the seriousness of this problem. But the solution to this immigration problem can’t be to extend indefinitely a public health measure that everybody now admits has outlived its public health justification.”
OK, so what’s the solution? The Biden administration has none, except to let everyone in.
![In this case, migrants would be turned back upon entering the US.](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/12/border-col-2.jpg?w=1024)
There is only one answer to a border crisis: Border enforcement.
By law, people must apply for asylum in the first protected country they enter. Due to this fact, every migrant from Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, etc. must be checked. Moreover, Biden can order the Border Patrol to reject groups or nationalities we all know are ineligible for asylum.
Former President Donald Trump made deals with Mexico to stem the flow of immigrants from Central and South America. With their actions and words, the administration has sent a transparent message that you’ll not be admitted.
Biden doesn’t want to try this. Democrats cynically imagine they’re importing the voters of their future. Only the election of a Republican president will truly stop the tide, and she or he can be unjustly attacked as heartless by a partisan press.
So do not be distracted by the “either side” narrative. There is no grand immigration “deal”. Work permits, green card limits, visas, the legal status of those already here – these are all side issues that need to be worked on as we stop tens of millions from making fun of the immigration laws that we I have already got.
