Spider-Man returned to the big screen this weekend, earning an estimated $120.5 million at the domestic box office.
Sony Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the long-awaited sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, had the second-biggest opening of 2023, just behind Universal’s “Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
The film can also be the third best opening weekend for any Spider-Man film, animated or live-action.
“As a PG animated film, Across The Spider-Verse” is capable of appeal to a younger audience beyond the core fans of PG-13 motion movies, thus ensuring the long-term cross-generational appeal of the character and movies,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Senior Media Analyst at PG-13 Comscore. “That is money in the bank for faculty and cinema.”
Across the Spider-Verse is estimated to have drawn greater than 9 million moviegoers over the weekend, in response to EntTelligence data. Film tickets account for about 56% of all foot traffic in cinemas from Thursday to Sunday, the data company said.
Moreover, 29% of patrons watched the film in premium format, paying a mean of $4.52 more per ticket.
“This debut is further proof that audiences are hungry for fresh, exciting tackle each superhero and animated movies,” said Shawn Robbins, Principal Analyst at BoxOffice.com.
Sony’s animated sequel to Spider-Man comes right after several strong box office releases, including Disney and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
With one other $10.2 million in box office sales during its fifth weekend in theaters, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” generated an estimated $322.7 million domestically. The film grossed $780.1 million worldwide.
The Little Mermaid saw a 58% drop in box office sales from its first to second weekends, at the industry average, adding $40.6 million to its global total. The film secured $186.2 million in domestic box office sales and $326.7 million worldwide.
Moreover, Disney’s “The Boogeyman” opened to $12 million in domestic box office sales, while Universal’s “Fast X” added $9.24 million in weekend box office sales, bringing domestic box office sales to $128.4 million.
In line with data from Comscore, the value of domestic ticket sales is roughly $3.6 billion since the starting of the yr, which is simply 21.9% lower than before the pandemic. To this point, the 2023 money register this yr is 27.9% higher than the same period in 2022.
“Between Spidey’s big start, The Little Mermaid’s specialty, the horror of “Boogeyman”, the remnants of “Guardians” and “Fast X” and way more, theater owners, studios and audiences are actually in full swing for the most enjoyable summer market in 4 years Robbins said.
