KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia has ambitious targets to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – however the Southeast Asian nation cannot do it alone, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said.
“They expect developing countries like Malaysia to do it on their own, which just isn’t realistic,” CNBC’s Anwar JP Ong told the Energy Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In March this yr Forecast by the International Renewable Energy Agency Malaysia will need to double investments within the renewable energy transition to at the very least $375 billion to meet its net-zero emissions goals by 2050.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to these goals, but said that partners in developed countries “need to understand that transformation takes time and investment” and that that they had to “play their part.”
Anwar added: “A drastic step could be on the expense of our education, health and development. But when it comes to commitment, it’s. The transition plan is. The energy transition has begun, it has begun.
