Standby in iOS 17

Apple’a serious iOS 17 update for iPhone will likely be launched this fall. I have been beta testing for a couple of weeks now, and while there is not any shortage of new features, my favorite is StandBy. It turns your iPhone right into a bedside clock so that you can glance at, even though it’s a lot better than a daily alarm clock.
It requires a phone with MagSafe, which suggests you wish an iPhone 12 or later.

Standby can do all sorts of things. For instance, you may get out of bed and swipe to see upcoming calendar events, swipe to examine the weather for the day, or quickly view notifications. Or, in the event you’re more of a traditionalist, you may just put it in your bedside table, displaying the different clock faces.

It can also work in your desk. Users can set StandBy mode to display a rotating array of photos from a picture library, just like smart home devices from Amazon or Google. Whether your phone is on the nightstand or in your desk, you may at all times say, “Siri, how long will it take me to get to work?” Or “Siri, turn off the bedroom lights and placed on Miles Davis music.”

You furthermore may do not have to fret about the shiny screen keeping you awake. Your iPhone will routinely dim the screen or turn off the display if you turn off the lights. And Apple borrowed a feature from the Apple Watch Ultra: there is a special night mode that changes the clock, calendar, and text to red for less eye strain.

You too can enable notifications with detailed information from the application. In the example above, UPS is notifying me that my gardening gloves can arrive around noon.
Standby works best with the iPhone 14 Pro, which has an always-on display. If you will have a unique model, the screen turns off, but you may quickly turn it back on with one touch.
Pro tip if you should make the most of this feature when it debuts for everybody this fall: buy a MagSafe charging stand to maintain your iPhone propped up against the bed while charging. I’m using something just like this Anker booth for $40that concurrently charges your AirPods.

You’ll be able to wait until iOS 17 is available to everyone or, if you should cope with some system bugs now, you may try it out in the public beta of iOS 17. Once installed, all it’s worthwhile to do is:
- Open Settings in your iPhone.
- Tap Standby.
- Turn it on.
- Select “At all times on” under Display in the event you don’t need the screen to show off. This works on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
- Select Night mode in the event you want the text to have a red tint.
- Select whether you should see notifications.
Then if you fall asleep, just place your iPhone on the charging stand in landscape or sideways mode and it would routinely remember turning on StandBy mode and show you the last screen you used, whether it was the clock, photo gallery or calendar.
