As recession fears and layoffs hit the headlines, recent graduates may find themselves in an uncertain job market.
AND recent survey of 1,000 American graduates aged 18 to 54 within the last 12 months indicated that many individuals are concerned about their “profession readiness”.
In keeping with the survey, nearly half of recent graduates said they didn’t apply for entry-level jobs because they felt insufficiently qualified.

While Gen Z staff – those aged 18 to 24 – may worry about inexperience, some industries are “aggressively” hiring, in accordance with LinkedIn.
For instance, the variety of job openings on the platform increased year-on-year in October 2022 in sectors akin to government – which saw a rise of 52% in Australia and a whopping 88% in Singapore.
Retail job openings increased by 114% in Australia and 49% in India, while logistics and provide chain jobs increased by 41% in Singapore.

Corporations are moving away from the “traditional, experience-based” approach to hiring first skills, said Chhabria.
She added that this was as a result of the “rapid pace of change and disruption” the industries are going through, and that skills-based hiring helps employers to rent talent that matches the changing needs of corporations.
“87% of recruiters consider that skills are key when vetting candidates. The skills-based approach also creates a wider pool of talent, and talent diversity is crucial to staying competitive in today’s marketplace.”
“LinkedIn data shows that within the Asia-Pacific region, a skills-based approach to hiring will increase the general Gen Z talent pool by 10.8 times in Australia, 14.1 times in India and seven times in Singapore,” she said.

While hard skills remain crucial to securing a job, soft skills may also help candidates stand out from the group.
“Hard skills may also help you get the recruiter’s attention, but soft skills may also help you get the job,” added Chhabria.
“Hard skills are the technical skills required to do the job. For instance, if you are applying for a Sales Specialist position, you have to be knowledgeable about sales processes and using the CRM platform,” she said.
“[But] you also need soft skills akin to presentation skills to present an important sales pitch to the client or communication skills to speak with the team and the client.”
