DETROIT – Pickups again led America’s best-selling vehicles last 12 months, but Tesla it’s in the top 10 for the first time as there’s a Covid-era upheaval amongst other popular models.
Data and analytics company Motor Intelligence reports that the Tesla Model Y electric crossover was the country’s sixth best-selling vehicle in 2022, beating the GMC Sierra pickup truck, the Honda CR-V crossover and other long-running bestsellers.
Tesla doesn’t report regional or individual vehicle sales, so the figures are estimates. Overall, Tesla reported delivering roughly 1.25 million Model Y and Model 3 vehicles worldwide in 2022. The Model 3 ranked thirteenth in terms of sales with 211,641 units, in line with Motor Intelligence.
“It’s no surprise that Tesla ranks so high,” said Michelle Krebs, an executive analyst at Cox Automotive. “The brand, despite all the novelties and stuff, still dominates the electric automobile market and dominates the luxury market. Much of that strength comes from the Model Y.”
Despite its lowest sales since 2012, the Ford F-Series was the nation’s best-selling vehicle for 41 years and America’s best-selling truck for 46 consecutive years. The Chevrolet Silverado regained its longtime second place after being overtaken by the Ram pickup in 2021.
Parts and provide chain issues since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in sporadic plant closures at various times for automakers, resulting in upheavals in vehicle sales rankings over the past few years.
“We have seen such large swings in sales and inventory,” Krebs said. “In 2022, the 12 months began with very high demand… but then we saw things change towards the end of the 12 months. Demand appeared to be easing somewhat while inventories, not overall, were increasing.”
Auto industry executives and analysts are cautiously optimistic that the US industry is normalizing more this 12 months, despite recession fears, rising rates of interest and other economic woes. In response to industry analysts, the industry sold between 13.7 and 13.9 million vehicles last 12 months. A typical 12 months before the pandemic generated greater than 17 million sales.
