DAVOS, Switzerland — The European Union disagrees with america over its opposition to China, the French finance minister told CNBC on Friday.
Speaking at a panel on the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the economic outlook, Bruno Le Maire of France said: “China must not fall out, China must are available in. That is the difference in views between the US and Europe.”
“We don’t need to oppose China, we would like to work with China, we would like China to follow the identical rules,” he said, “that is our policy.”
The US has taken a confrontational approach to China, especially when it involves the tech sector. Nonetheless, the European Union sought a balance between political friendship with america and economic ties with China.
While European officials have said China is a strategic rival, additionally they recognize that they need to develop trade relations with Beijing and work together against climate change.
French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly planning a visit to China in the approaching weeks to debate energy and trade issues, in addition to the broader ramifications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Data from the European Statistical Office showed that China was the third largest partner in EU exports of products in 2021 and the biggest import partner.
