Adult Swim said on Tuesday that it had cut its ties with “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland following news earlier this month that he had been charged with domestic violence in California.
“Adult Swim has ended its partnership with Justin Roiland,” Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Boomerang spokeswoman Marie Moore told statement for the Hollywood Reporter.
A tweet from the “Rick and Morty” account on Tuesday noted that the favored adult cartoon will proceed: “A talented and dedicated crew is difficult at work on Season 7.”
Roiland, who voices the title characters Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith and is the show’s executive producer, was charged in 2020 in Orange County with one count of domestic battery with bodily harm and one count of false imprisonment as a consequence of threats, violence, fraud and/or fraud, is clear from court records.
Roiland, 42, pleaded not guilty in 2020 to the fees stemming from an incident that allegedly took place on January 19, 2020.
Details are being withheld from the general public under a protective order, based on NBC Newswho broke news of the allegations earlier this month.
The Post reached out to an attorney for Roiland and Adult Swim for comment. An Adult Swim representative pointed The Post to a Tuesday tweet from the “Rick and Morty” account.
Records show that Roiland, a two-time Emmy Award winner, was released on $50,000 bail in August 2020 before being arraigned in October of that yr.
On the pre-trial hearing on January 12, Roiland’s attorney noted that a settlement was being prepared, but details weren’t available on the time, reported NBC News. Roiland is anticipated to look in court on April 27 for an additional pre-trial hearing. The date of the hearing has not been set.
In an earlier statement to The Post, Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, called media reports of his client’s case “inaccurate” and vouched for his innocence.
“To be clear, not only is Justin innocent, but we even have every expectation that this case can be dismissed once the DA’s office completes its methodical evaluation of the evidence,” Welbourn said. “We look ahead to clearing Justin’s name and helping him as soon as possible.”
In accordance with the Hollywood Reporter, Adult Swim has ordered 70 latest episodes of the animated sci-fi series that premiered in 2013 — and the team is not halfway through their 2018 order yet. The shop reported that the characters Roiland once voiced would require re-casting after his departure.
Roiland has played lots of the animated roles he has collaborated with recently Hulu as a co-creator of the streaming giant’s program “Solar Opposites”. He also executive produces and voices Hulu’s Koala Man. The post contacted Hulu for comment on Tuesday.
