As in Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s 2019, novel, Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Claflin herself) meet for the first time in a recording studio when she is invited to duet with him in Daisy Jones and the Six TV series. Nevertheless, for the Amazon Prime Video adaptation, the circumstances are a bit different. Firstly, The Six have already recorded their second album in the book, they’ve never been faraway from their label like in the show.
But the biggest change can also be subtle: Daisy doesn’t rewrite the love song lyrics, she just changes the way she sings them, asking “questions as an alternative of statements,” according to Billy on the site. Their initial – and climactic – introduction is equally tense and exciting in each versions and is a defining moment for the band, not to mention a sober Billy.
“Billy wrote songs trying to persuade himself he had all the things under control,” says keyboardist Karen in the book. “And after about two minutes of singing, Daisy pulled the tablecloth out from under his dishes.”
After the recording session, a concerned Billy calls his wife Camila (Kamila Morrone) to tell her it was an “awful” experience, although everyone in the studio admitted that that they had witnessed something special. In the book, the singer also complains to Camila, who tells him, “This isn’t real life, Billy. It is a song. Don’t bend over.”
But “I could not recover from it,” explains Billy. “I didn’t like that Daisy turned those lines into questions, and I didn’t like that she felt she had the right to do it.”
