Seattle startup Mast (formerly DroneSeed) is taking a high-tech approach to reforestation.
Reforestation of the mast
Last 12 months, america experienced greater than 68,000 forest fires that consumed roughly 7.6 million acres nationwide, In accordance with National Interagency Fire Service Center.
Each numbers have increased since 2021, continuing an unlucky trend that has occurred over the past 20 years because of this of a rapidly changing climate.
All this scorched earth means the country needs a dramatic increase in reforestation. But there shouldn’t be enough supply of native seeds and cuttings to fulfill the demands of re-growth.
That is where the Seattle-based startup called in Reforestation of the mast sees a chance.
Founded in 2016 as DroneSeed, Mast is best known for flying swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles over charred earth to drop seeds that may take root and grow. The mast still provides aerial seeding, but drones are only one component of the growing reforestation-as-a-service business, said founder and CEO Grant Canary.
On Tuesday, Canary said Mast had acquired Cal Forest Nurseries, which grows tens of thousands and thousands of native conifer seedlings annually for lumber corporations, private landowners and public agencies in western states. The terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed.
The acquisition comes two years after Mast bought SilvaSeed, an organization that collects and processes cones and seeds from wild forests. Mast currently employs 130 full-time employees, including 45 from Cal Forest.
Canary said the technology is required to “scaling reforestation” and the addition of Cal Forest should help reduce the present years that Mast customers should wait for native seeds and seedlings.
Faster reforestation
“We’d like to drag carbon out of the atmosphere, and trees are highly developed and effective at doing that,” Canary said of the climate change advantages of faster reforestation.
Along with improving air quality, trees growing within the forest at the best density support more biodiversity and may even function a form of natural cooling plant, keeping the water under their roots cleaner, colder and more abundant in rivers and dams, Canary said.
Mast’s planned reforestation projects in 2023 include a site in Montana to expand moose habitat around Yellowstone National Park and other fire-affected communities.
Along with supplying supplies, Mast also sells carbon offsets for reforestation projects. This money covers the associated fee of seeds, drone flights and other expenses, and stops landowners from bearing the financial burden themselves.
Corporations buy credits to fulfill their internal sustainability goals or to comply with regulations that require them to offset greenhouse gas emissions or other negative environmental impacts.
Last 12 months, Mast set about restoring the forest at Henry Creek in western Oregon as a part of a pilot project, using its own seeds and a mix of drone and hand planting techniques. As a part of this initiative, the corporate sold carbon credits to tech corporations, including Shopify. He now intends that each reforestation effort can have an associated sale of carbon offsets.

“The subsequent step is to make this manual available to landowners across the West,” said Nancy Pfund of DBL Partners, one among the primary investors in Tesla, Mast and other climate technology corporations. “I feel we’re going to start out seeing the corporate deftly address the shortfall of high-quality carbon offsets for giant corporations with net-zero targets.”
While some investors shun corporations that base their revenues on credit, the “compliance market” is growing. Carbon allowances traded in the worldwide market soared to a record $851 billion in 2022, in keeping with data Refinite estimates.
A 12 months after Mast replants the location, an external forester will got down to test some sample plots to make sure the trees are growing as planned and delivering the intended environmental advantages.
Mast also establishes a foundation for every project that funds 100 years of monitoring each site using a mix of manual site inspections and aerial photography.
The corporate has other revenue models in its plans for the longer term. This includes targeting real estate corporations that want healthy forests on or near their properties, and state and federal agencies tasked with reforestation.

Mast has raised greater than $36 million in enterprise funding from climate-focused investors, including Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six, Social Capital, DBL Partners, Marc Benioff’s Time Ventures, Elemental Excelerator, and Spero Ventures.
Other corporations are combining software with hardware to take global reforestation efforts. Seed banks and reforestation organizations equivalent to Flash Forest in Canada, Terraformation in Hawaii and the non-profit organization WeForest in Brussels have also attracted the support of enterprise capitalists.
Pfund told CNBC that adequate reforestation would require a solid coalition of presidency, nonprofits, corporations and revolutionary start-ups. While forestry and reforestation don’t receive the identical federal funding as transportation electrification, “what could seem small and unfamiliar today actually has the potential to create positive global change and thus provide significant returns to investors,” she said. he said.
