British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday hailed a “reunification moment” after years of post-Brexit political turmoil between the 2 countries.
“This summit is indeed special,” Macron said at a joint press conference on Friday afternoon, according to the interpretation. “I’d clearly say it is a moment of reunification, reconnection and a recent starting.”
His comments got here because the two political leaders announced progress on illegal migration, energy and security challenges.
Britain’s Sunak acknowledged that bilateral relations between London and Paris had been difficult in recent times, but said Friday’s meeting “marked a recent starting” for each countries.
Amongst a number of the migration deals, Sunak and Macron said a recent reformatory could be in-built northern France, an extra 500 recent officers would patrol French beaches, and more drones and surveillance technology could be deployed.
On defense, the countries agreed to train Ukrainian marines to help Kiev win a war against Russia, increase the interoperability of their armed forces, and jointly explore the event of complex weapons similar to air defense and long-range weapons.
Their engagement within the work was the primary face-to-face meeting between the leaders of Britain and France for the reason that start of the coronavirus pandemic and the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Sunak and Macron greeted one another warmly on Friday morning on the Elysée Palace.
“The fates of Britain and France are intertwined” Macron said via Twitterwhen he welcomed Sunak to Paris. “Our common challenges. Protecting our planet, supporting Ukraine, cooperating on security and energy issues: together we move forward” – he added according to the interpretation.
Macron and Sunak are expected to hold a press briefing shortly after the talks are concluded.
They’re expected to finalize agreements on migration crossings, energy security and protection against the Russian threat. Sunak and Macron described the summit as a possibility to reset strained relations between the channels.
Speaking before meeting Macron, Sunak he said“Our deep history, our proximity and our shared global perspective mean that a powerful partnership between the UK and France is just not only beneficial but essential.”
He added: “Within the face of recent and unprecedented threats, it’s important that we strengthen our alliance structures in order that we’re ready to tackle the challenges of the long run. That’s what we can be doing on the UK-France Summit today. “
Earlier this week, Sunak exposed plans to discourage people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.
The initiative was heavily criticized by the opposition and refugee charities. The UN Refugee Agency said it was “deeply concerned“by a bill that prohibits people deemed to have entered the UK illegally from applying for asylum.

Dispelling the “political and diplomatic fog”
Analysts on the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group didn’t expect any groundbreaking announcements from the summit, but they expected progress in bilateral defense cooperation and joint motion within the fight against irregular migration across the English Channel.
They noted that French officials had previously accused former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson of scary a series of diplomatic disputes between Paris and London. These include arguments over post-Brexit fishing rights, Covid-19 restrictions and a French deal to sell submarines to Australia – which has been derailed by one other US-UK deal with Canberra.
Eurasia Group analysts said there was an impression amongst British observers that Macron was deliberately making life difficult for London after the UK voted to leave the European Union in 2016.
“An important achievement of the summit can be the dissipation of the political and diplomatic fog over the English Channel that has weakened bilateral relations between Brexit,” they added.
