The “NHL Big City Greens Classic” The published uses NHL Edge positioning data (puck and player tracking) to recreate the actual motion happening on the ice at Madison Square Garden.
Broadcast on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney+the TV show also features characters from the Disney comedy series “Big City Greens” who go ice skating animated versions of NHL players.
ESPN commentators Kevin Weekes and Drew Carter call this virtual game wearing motion capture suits that allow for full-body animations within the Big City.
Facial recognition technology is used to mimic the reactions of Chris Houghton, co-creator/executive producer of the animated series, and actress Marieve Herington, who voices Tilly.
“I really need my curiosity to run deep, my excitement,” said Weekes, a former NHL goaltender NHL.com.
“I hope that translates into the printed itself, because we’re being transferred, obviously for me, I will probably be transferred to a different world. And more importantly, we wish to give you the chance to move the viewer, the listener into one other world.”
“Not only are the players the artists, so are the characters, and now we will type of mix and integrate the 2 within the storytelling through animation and this technology,” added Weekes.
The special broadcast is a collaboration between ESPN, Disney Channel and the NHL. The actual-time animation is produced in partnership with the ESPN Edge Innovation Center and NHL partners EDGE Innovation Verizon, Beyond Sports and Silver Spoon.
The standard telecast between the Rangers and the Capitals is on the market on ESPN and ESPN+.
