Google’s parent Alphabet is slashing more of its generous worker allowances because the tech giant tries to chop costs and sustain with the continued race to develop advanced AI.
The corporate will close a few of its “micro-kitchens” that were stocked with free drinks and snacks and shuttered cafeterias with less foot traffic as a part of a push to extend efficiency, in keeping with a memo signed by Google’s chief financial officer Ruth Porat and other top executives .
Google can even cut spending on company-supplied equipment equivalent to personal laptops, and top management will make “changes to what’s available and the way often it’s replaced,” in keeping with the memo.
“We wish to be honest that there are also areas where we are going to see cost savings that can affect among the services Googlers use on and off the job,” a handful of Google executives said in a memo.
“We’ve got set the bar high for industry-leading office accessories, advantages and amenities, and we are going to proceed to accomplish that in the longer term. Nonetheless, some programs must evolve to adapt to the way in which Google works today,” the memo added.
Along with cost savings, directors said the “changes will reduce food waste and be higher for the environment.”
As well as, Google will strive to enhance the performance of its servers and data centers. The corporate is also testing an “enhanced shopping mall” to assist reduce delivery costs.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the content of the memo, which was first obtained by Insider.
“As we’ve got publicly stated, our company goal is to attain sustainable cost savings by improving speed and performance,” Google said in an announcement.
“As a part of this, we’re making several practical changes that can help us remain responsible stewards of our assets while continuing to supply industry-leading perks, advantages and facilities.”
Losing more perks could further hurt morale at an organization that has long offered employees a bunch of perks, from free food to team ski trips to office sleeping pods.
Fast Company Report 2019 said Google has more than 1,300 micro-kitchens in its offices world wide which are “filled with dried seaweed, dried turkey, kombucha and other eclectic goodies.”
The memo referred to Google’s recent massive round of layoffs of around 12,000, with executives noting that pink slips are “still being developed in some countries.”
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has outlined the obligatory cuts as the corporate dedicates more resources to AI development and other core business news.
The corporate is attempting to meet up with Microsoft-backed ChatGPT AI chatbot OpenAi, which has captivated the general public in recent months with its advanced human-like query responses.
Google’s chatbot, Bard, has received mixed reviews up to now.
As The Post reported in January, Google laid off at the very least 31 on-site massage therapists in California alone as a part of last January’s layoffs.
Elsewhere, Google is reportedly requiring employees in its underperforming cloud division to share desks and switch days on the office.
Last September, Google’s CEO told some managers to reduce on non-essential integration activities and travel.
