The number of corporate employees McDonald’s plans to lay off this week can be within the “hundreds”, a source aware of the burger chain’s considering said on Monday as the corporate moves forward with a previously announced restructuring.
The fast-food company is closing its offices “out of respect” and “to make sure the dignity, confidentiality and luxury of our colleagues,” said a source who was not authorized to speak to the media.
“It used to be that folks were called to a conference room with the windows taped up after which had to return to their desk to get their personal belongings and leave with their heads down,” the source said.
McDonald’s can have more employees entering recent positions or receiving promotions this week than laid off, the source added. The chain known for Golden Arches employs greater than 150,000 employees worldwide, roughly 70% of whom are based outside america, including in company-owned restaurants.
The layoffs don’t affect the greater than 2 million employees at McDonald’s franchise restaurants worldwide.
Chicago-based McDonald’s didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
McDonald’s said in January it will review corporate staffing levels as part of its updated business strategy, which could lead on to layoffs in some areas and expansion in others.
McDonald’s can be planning to construct recent restaurants as part of its strategy update. Over the past yr, he has increased the costs on his menu as the price of goods and labor has increased.
