BEIJING — The heads of the US and Chinese central banks met on Tuesday in Washington, DC, the People’s Bank of China said in a Friday statement.
PBoC Governor Yi Gang and US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell “exchanged views” on economic and financial trends between China and america, the statement said, in line with CNBC’s translation.
The meeting of Fed and PBoC chiefs comes as political tensions between the world’s two largest economies have escalated and limited high-level interaction. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said this week that he still hopes to go to Chinawithout specifying when.
Yi attended the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., in line with the PBOC statement. It didn’t contain any photos.
The US Federal Reserve and the IMF didn’t immediately reply to CNBC’s request for comment outside of local business hours.
