Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and Toronto has long prided itself on being considered one of the safest major cities in the world.
In 2020, shortly after a gunman shot and killed 13 people in Portapique, Nova Scotia, Canada, greater than 1,500 models of firearms and “assault” components were banned and limits on destructive rounds were set.
The death rate per person from firearms is far lower than in the United States, where gun laws are more lenient.
2021 evaluation by the University of Washington’s Institute of Metrics and Health Assessment (IHME) said Canada’s firearm homicide rate is 0.5 per 100,000 people, in comparison with 4.12 in the United States.
