A Thai woman lost her leg when she got stuck in a moving walkway at Bangkok airport on Thursday – but doctors hope the disfigured limb will be reattached.
The 57-year-old passenger, whose name has not been released, was about to board a flight at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport when she tripped over her suitcase and her foot got stuck in the pavement of the hub’s Terminal 2.
The medical team on the scene tried to extricate her before finally having her left leg amputated above the knee.
A photo taken moments after the horrific incident shows a woman leaning against a rescuer, her missing limb hidden in blue jeans.
She was first taken to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital where she was told that her leg couldn’t be put back on.
The woman is now receiving a second opinion at Banrungrad International Hospital, where doctors have said the leg will be reattached, Straits Times reported.

“On behalf of Don Mueang International Airport, I would love to precise my deepest condolences for the accident,” Don Mueang Airport Director Karun Thanakuljeerapat said at a press conference.
“I would love to insist that we be sure that such an accident won’t occur again.”
Thanakuljeerapat added that the airport will cover the passenger’s medical expenses and is open to discussing additional compensation.

The moving walkway involved in the accident was manufactured in 1996 by the Japanese company Hitachi, the airport said.
Wheels of a suitcase were found under the pavement after the incident, even though it is just not clear how this may occasionally have contributed to the bizarre accident.
