Authorities in Canada are on the lookout for an Australian woman after she disappeared while mountaineering in bear country.
Julia-Mary Lane, 24, was reported missing by her roommate on Monday after failing to return from a hike on the Bear Lake Trail near Kimberely, British Columbia. ABC News reported.
Lane – who goes by JM – was last seen Saturday afternoon visiting the region with Canmore Alberta, her roommate shared on social media.
“Disappearing like this is completely not JM’s style. [Her family is] I normally contact her day by day and have not heard from her since Saturday morning,” roommate Janet Hamilton wrote on a social media Facebook group.
IN update a number of hours later, Lane’s brother Conor said his sister’s roommate in Alberta had also not heard from her.
Lane’s Ford Escape SUV was found in Bear Lake, Guardian reported. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is now searching the area around the vehicle.

“She travels thoroughly, she’s athletic, she’s capable … she’s anxious the ground is unstable and she or he’s fallen and there are bears around,” Lane’s mother, Rosalind Lane, told ABC News.
She added that the family would “probably” go to Canada to assist with the search, but “they’re trying to not take into consideration the worst-case scenario.”
“I just hope he gets home safely,” the distraught mother said.

Lane is from Brisbane and moved to Canada in January, as noted by ABC News. At the time of her disappearance, she was planning to start out a latest job in finance.
She is the youngest of 4 children and texted her older sister most mornings.
The University of Queensland graduate last spoke to her father on Saturday morning Australian time.

A couple of days before her disappearance, Lane posted to a Facebook group in search of mountaineering advice in the Bear Lake area, The Guardian reports.
“I’m visiting Canmore for a number of days and would really like to hitch any moderate or difficult hike anyone has planned,” she wrote.
“I’m comfortable mountaineering alone, but would favor to go together with a gaggle to reduce the risk of a bear of course.”
