A Chinese content creator died last week after live-streaming himself consuming an excessive amount of extremely strong alcohol.
The 34-year-old influencer, referred to as “Sanqiange”, was found dead 12 hours after his May 16 livestream on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, based on CNN.
Through the broadcast, he reportedly drank a minimum of seven bottles of Baijiu, a Chinese liqueur with an alcohol content of between 30% and 60%.
Sanqiange was allegedly involved in a web-based challenge, called “PK”, against one other creator on the platform.
Within the “PK” challenge, two influencers often compete for gifts or prizes from their respective audiences. The loser is punished.
On this case, it looks like Baijiu was a consequence of losing three rounds, BBC reports.
“I do not understand how much he drank before I turned on. But within the second a part of the video, I saw him finish three bottles before he began the fourth,” a friend of the influencer told local outlet Shangyou News, which reported that a funeral was held last week.
“When his family found him, he was gone, he didn’t actually have a probability for urgent treatment,” added the friend.
The influencer’s name was revealed by local media as Wang, with a friend describing him as “decent and easy.”
The footage went viral on social media across the country, but can not be viewed online.
The BBC reports that Douyin bans drinking during live streams, and the streamer has already been banned from the app for doing so up to now.
Some dangerous online challenges have had fatal consequences, raising concerns in regards to the security of live streaming apps.
Earlier this 12 months, a teen died after collaborating within the “Benadryl challenge”, while one other child died collaborating within the “blackout challenge”.
In 2022, a bunch of teenagers jumped in front of moving vehicles in Indonesia within the TikTok “angel of death” challenge.
