The convicted man waited until he had finished serving his 15-year sentence on Tuesday to plead guilty to the unrelated stabbing deaths of a pregnant mother and her 6-year-old son in 2002.
Lewis Ladon Spivey, 39, was immediately arrested in Florida after pleading guilty to murdering 23-year-old Monica Rollins and Dalton Rollins at their home in Alabama 21 years ago.
Rollins was eight and a half months pregnant when she was mercilessly stabbed to death by Heflin Police Captain Scott Bonner he said at Friday’s press conference.
She and Dalton were killed days before their bodies were present in September 2002 in Heflin, a town 75 miles east of Birmingham.
Rollins’ 3-year-old son survived alone in a house next to his family’s mutilated bodies and was found by investigators hiding unharmed in a closet.
They continued to pursue potential suspects for the past 20 years, however the case remained unresolved, according to Bonner.

Spivey, who has a swastika tattoo around his neck, allegedly kept this dirty secret to himself until he was released on Tuesday from a Florida prison where state records show he had just accomplished a 2010 sentence for unrelated robbery and aggravated assault charges .
“Spivey has since cooperated with the investigation and made a full confession outlining the timeline of events that day and taking sole responsibility for each murders,” Bonner said.
Bonner described Spivey as an “acquaintance” of Rollins and said the 2 “had a relationship”, but didn’t reveal the motive or circumstances leading up to the killings.
The cold case investigator gave few details about what led to the case being placed on hold, saying only that the department received a grant for DNA evaluation and a number of other items were processed by a state and personal laboratory in Canada.

Bonner said Spivey was investigated immediately after the stabbing, but detectives hit a dead end.
“We had no surveillance, photos or cameras,” Bonner said. “We did not have the belongings you would have today.”
Spivey has since been transported to Alabama and is being held on the Cleburne County Jail.
He’s being held without bail under the state’s Anias Law, which denies bail to violent criminals accused of crimes ranging from human trafficking to murder
