And the Golden Globes go to… Dick Clark Productions.
The California-based nonprofit announced Monday that it and asset management company Eldridge have acquired all Golden Globes assets, rights and properties from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the deal will end the HFPA and its membership.
Dick Clark Productions, which hosts the Billboard Music Awards and Dick Clark’s New Yr’s Eve Party, will plan, host and produce the annual Golden Globe Awards. The corporate also established the Golden Globe Foundation, which can proceed the HFPA’s legacy of charitable entertainment.
“As stewards of the Golden Globes, our mission is to proceed to create the most dynamic awards ceremony on live TV worldwide,” said Jay Penske, CEO, President and Founding father of Penske Media and CEO of Dick Clark Productions. “Now we have a great team growing this iconic brand and bringing in new and existing viewers to have fun the better of TV and film.”
The dissolution of the HFPA and the transfer of the Golden Globes to Dick Clark Productions follows several controversies surrounding the journalism organization. In 2021, NBC declined to air the 2022 annual show as a result of concerns about a lack of diversity inside the group’s ranks. The Golden Globes return to NBC in 2023.
The fallout began in February 2021, when revealed in the Los Angeles Times he specified that none of the group’s 87 members were black and questioned the credentials of many Los Angeles journalists working for foreign media. A lot of these were found to contribute only occasionally to little-known foreign outlets.
Over the years, many in and out of the industry have questioned why some projects and talent were nominated for the HFPA award and others weren’t. Often, the nominees for the Golden Globes were significantly different from those at the guild awards ceremonies and the Oscars.
Concerns have also been raised about the HFPA’s practice of accepting gifts during the voting period after dozens of its members traveled to France to go to Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” set and were housed in a five-star hotel for $1,400 a night on Paramount Network penny. The show subsequently received two Golden Globe nominations.
The subsequent Golden Globes will happen on January 7, 2024.
