WASHINGTON — Hunter Biden’s first son advised then-Vice President Joe Biden’s office on whom to ask to state ceremonies involving China, in addition to where to go to when traveling to Africa, emails checked by The Post show.
On Wednesday, the National Archives released a heavily edited news collection – with uncensored emails from Hunter’s abandoned laptop filling in among the blanks. The emails forged doubt on the elder Biden’s general denial of ever discussing his offspring’s overseas business interests.
Three completely redacted emails discuss with “Chinese Lunch” in the topic line in obvious reference to then-Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to Washington in January 2011, while three others discuss with the “Nairobi idea” prior to Joe Biden’s visit in Kenya in June 2010.
Emails have been confirmed but “stopped entirely” in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit looking for communication between Joe Biden’s office, Hunter, and first brother James Biden, with whom Hunter has collaborated on many ventures.
The emails regarding China and Nairobi were redacted of their entirety, and the archives invoked the “p5” exception under the Freedom of Information Act. The exception protects “confidential communications requesting or submitting advice between the President and the President’s advisers or between such advisers.”

The November 19, 2010 “China Lunch” email thread was archived since it concerned Evan Ryan and Michele Smith, then within the vp’s office. Ryan is currently President Biden’s Cabinet Secretary and is married to Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The day before these emails were sent, Hunter Biden’s business partner Eric Schwerin emailed then-second son a few Chinese state dinner in two months, which would come with a “traditional VP/SecState dinner” to which Schwerin suggested Biden be invited from an in depth relative long-distance associates of the family business, including Jim Bulger and Jeff Cooper.
“Michele called and said they’d like some name suggestions for lunch. They’ve 30 spots on the Vice President’s personal list,” Schwerin wrote.
“Your dad already has 22 slots allocated, but when someone matches the variety of ‘business leader’, ‘elected official’, ‘think tank’ they could be added along with the opposite 8 personal slots. she asks [fellow second son and then-Delaware Attorney General] Lover [Biden] if he has suggestions too.

Schwerin added: “A number of thoughts – what about President Harris of Widener [University]? They’re desperately attempting to get to China with this Confucius [sic] Institute. They may also consider Father Pilarz of Scranton (soon to be Marquette) also they are considering China. Jim Bulger (or someone from his group)? Greg Penner? Gavin Newsom? Cooper? David Boren? Anyone from the Labor Party?
Two e-mails appeared on Hunter’s laptop titled “China Lunch” – matching the edited title of the thread – showing Schwerin writing to Hunter: “Listed here are my thoughts: Greg Penner Jim Harris, CEO of Widener Jeff Cooper Also consider: Someone at Amtrak (Boardman/Critic?).”
Cooper, a wealthy asbestos litigation lawyer, was an in depth associate of Hunter and James Biden and was involved in Hunter and James’ 2006 takeover attempt of a Latest York investment bank during which Cooper’s law firm had invested $1 million. Meanwhile, Bulger was involved in Hunter and James Biden’s Chinese ventures.
In a November 18 email to Schwerin, Hunter writes “Greg Penner is a fantastic idea” and recommends that the invitation be prolonged as well “if Devon is there too”, which seems to discuss with his convicted associate Devon Archer with whom he joined He was on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, which paid him as much as $1 million a yr when his father took over the Obama administration’s Ukrainian portfolio.
Lower than per week later, Archer, who has since been convicted of defrauding an American Indian tribe, emailed Hunter a listing of “sovereign targets.”
“What are your out-of-the-box thoughts on foreign destinations? Based on each your primary relationships and your hunches concerning the likelihood of success? ….For me it’s: China[,] Turkey[,] Mexico[,] Argentina[,] India[,] Columbia[,] Israel[,] Norway, Serbia, Singapore, Korea, Canada[,] Germany and Australia [and] Gulf region,” Archer wrote.

One laptop email titled “China Lunch” showed Schwerin emailing Smith: “Michele – We’re working on a number of more names we may get early next week, but one among Hunter’s suggestions is Greg Penner. Greg Penner is the final partner of Madrone Capital Partners and a member of the board of directors of Wal-Mart. We will get more information if needed. Just let me know.”
Not one of the “China Lunch” e-mails from the laptop vault match the timestamps of the three listed within the Archives’ redactors, although one which cc-ed Hunter would match if the sender and receiver were in numerous time zones.
Meanwhile, the Nairobi Ideas network contained three e-mails from early June 2010 concerning Anthony Bernal, who then worked within the Vice President’s office and is now a key adviser to First Lady Jill Biden.
Although completely redacted, emails with the identical title have been appearing within the laptop vault since late May 2010. The laptop thread of this title was began by former diplomat David Lane, then-One Campaign Against Poverty U2 singer Bono, who on May 30, 2010 beneficial Hunter “three interesting ideas for Nairobi”.
Lane suggested a visit to a hospital, a slum, and a gathering with Kenyan anti-corruption activist John Githongo.
“All of them look great,” Hunter replied to Lane on June 1. “I run them through OVP [Office of the Vice President] Staff to see what matches the schedule and see in the event that they are already planning something similar. As soon as I get a sketch of the schedule, I’ll send it. Also, I attempted to drop by [sic] this book, nevertheless it has not yet been published. Thanks.”
E-mails with the identical title regarding Nairobi, which were published by the Archives, contain one message from Hunter to Bernal on June 3. On June 5, Bernal delivered the recommendations in two different threats – one to recipients who were redacted due to “personal email address[es]and one other for Annmarie Tomasini, who then worked within the vp’s office and worked as director of operations for President Biden’s Oval Office.
The Archives didn’t immediately reply to The Post’s request for comment on the explanations for redaction.
Hunter Biden’s legal team and White House officials also didn’t respond immediately.
The America First Legal Foundation, founded by Trump’s former White House adviser Stephen Miller, has filed an FOIA lawsuit and previously filed a grievance with the Department of Justice accusing Hunter of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act by corresponding with the vp’s office over Burisma.
Hunter is under investigation by Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss for alleged tax fraud, money laundering and FARA violations related to his overseas income.
IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, who oversaw the five-year case for greater than three years, testified Friday before the House Ways and Means committee of alleged cover-ups, including “preferential treatment” and false testimony to Congress by Attorney General Merrick Garland about Weiss’s ability to to bring charges.
