For busy British baker Holly Tait, every week is Cake Week at Project Cakery, her in-demand small business on the sting of England’s elite Cotswolds region.
So when a stranger contacted her out of the blue asking for 3 10-inch cakes to rejoice the 61st birthday of any person named George, she considered turning down the gig.
“It was short notice and loads of pressure because I already had r — I shouldn’t really have said yes,” the frazzled flour flogger, 22, told SWNS.
The background to the stranger’s easy, “subtle” request, Tait said, was that there was a movie being made in the world, and the director’s birthday was coming up.
“It just must say ‘Comfortable Birthday George’ and will follow the theme of water and boating,” the icing queen remembers being told.
Beyond that, she was invited to exercise her own creativity, but simply to ensure that there was enough cake for 200 people.
Before long, Tait discovered that the stranger was George Clooney’s personal assistant; the “E.R.” actor was in England directing “The Boys within the Boat,” a retelling of the true story of the fantastic gold win enjoyed by the American rowing team on the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
Tait was asked to maintain her small role within the making of the film a secret until the movie was finally released jus.
“I was told to not say anything until the movie got here out,” she said.
“From my standpoint it was just one other cake order — however it was picked up in a non-public taxi! It was a Victoria sponge, nothing fancy, only a crowd pleaser,” Tait said.
It worked — she was sent a photograph the next day, with a note saying the cakes were “delicious.”
“I didn’t even know it was for the George Clooney — but I worked extra hard to make it occur,” she recounted.
Project Cakery focuses on “bespoke, stunning wedding & celebration cakes with GF & VG options.”
Tait has been baking cakes for her clients since she turned 18.
