Australian skilled golfer Jason Day has revealed the real reason why Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw from the 2022 PGA Championship and it sounds incredibly painful.
Discussing Woods’ retirement from the Masters on Sunday, Day said the 47-year-old golf icon withdrew from the event in May 2022 after a bolt went through his skin.
“I spoke to him late last yr after which he said the reason he pulled out of the PGA was due to a screw that went through his skin on Saturday, or whatever it was.” Day, who has been friends with Woods for years, recalls.
“I do not know the way bad it is that this time… it’s only a shame he isn’t playing here.”
15-time major champion Woods withdrew from the 2022 PGA Championship after shooting a 79 in the third round at Southern Hills.
The weather conditions that day were cold and wet – much like Augusta National over the weekend when play was suspended resulting from bad weather.
“Well, I’m sore,” Woods said in May 2022 after his final round of the PGA Championship. “I do know that is a fact.”
At the time, Woods was experiencing pain in his surgically repaired right leg after a near-fatal automotive accident in February 2021.
“He was obviously in a variety of pain and discomfort today,” Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent, said at the time. “Fast execution, dramatic weather conditions.
“The long run has all the time been a day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month thing.”
Woods clearly had difficulty walking before retiring from the Masters on Sunday, which he said was resulting from a flare-up of plantar fasciitis.
On Saturday, Woods limped on the seventeenth hole and winced in pain as he returned to the Augusta National to complete his second inning after a suspension.
“He looked like he worked really hard yesterday,” Day said of Woods, who was competing in his twenty fifth Masters.
“Obviously it was hard to observe because he had to return and play all of it out yesterday morning after which he needed to take somewhat break and are available back and play it again.”
Asked if he had contacted Woods after his withdrawal, Day said: “I’ll sooner or later. After all not today. I’ll give him a while.
“I’m sure everyone seems to be turning to him immediately. Like I said, you’ll be able to all see how he feels on TV. I do not know what he feels inside, how bad it’s.
Woods, a five-time green jacket winner, said he was “dissatisfied” to withdraw from the Masters.
“Thanks to the fans and @TheMasters who’ve shown me a lot love and support,” Woods wrote on Twitter.
Woods made history together with his twenty third consecutive Masters cut, joining Fred Couples and Gary Player as those with the longest winning streak in history.
Fans are hoping to see Woods at the Oak Hill Country Club for the PGA Championship in late May
