MELBOURNE, Australia – Australian jockey Dean Holland has died from injuries sustained in a fall during a race in regional Victoria on Monday, Racing Victoria said.
The state’s horse racing authority said Holland, 34, was certainly one of two jockeys who fell off their horses in the opening race at Donald Racecourse.
He was treated by paramedics but died on the scene.

The opposite contestant, Alana Kelly, was cleared of significant injuries.
“It was a tragic accident at Donald today and we’re all deeply shocked and saddened that Dean has passed away,” said Andrew Jones, CEO of Racing Victoria.
“Dean was a gifted lightweight rider who…was highly respected by his peers. Dean’s passing is heartbreaking for everybody in Victorian racing and sport at a national level.”

The Netherlands won the Group 1 race last month with a horse named In Secret in the Newmarket Handicap 1,200m race at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse. Racing.com listed the Netherlands as having 1,080 profession wins.
He began racing in 2005 and had his first winner in January 2006 in Ceduna in the regional state of South Australia.
The Victoria State Police was preparing a report for the coroner.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that Holland was nearing the finish line when his horse, Headingley, swerved into the within rail.
