“To drift in that water and know the creatures which are there and still be there some 20 hours later – he’s extremely lucky.”
The person left Moa Island – positioned in a strait between Australia and Papua Recent Guinea – in his small dinghy at around 9:30am on Tuesday for the roughly 40-mile journey to Warraber Island.
By around 11 a.m., he was in contact together with his family, who reported him missing at 6 p.m. after failing to succeed in his final destination or regain contact.

Officials said he was spotted just over a mile away holding onto a flotsam.
“He’s in really good spirits and doesn’t have any serious medical conditions,” said Senior Sergeant Moynihan – using this as a message to inform water users to “enjoy, but just make certain you could have enough safety equipment.”
