‘Modern Family’ star Julie Bowen reveals her teenage struggles with an eating disorder.
The 52-year-old actress stopped “The Tamron Hall Show” where she highlighted the similarities she sees in herself and her sons: 15-year-old Oliver and 13-year-old twins Gustavie and John, whom she shares with ex-husband Scott Phillips.
She explained that considered one of her sons “all the time tries to paint the lines and get an A”, identical to she did at that age – only along with her body image.
“I believe [as a teen] I interpreted mess, making mistakes, butt or some fat protruding from under jeans [as] symbol you could not stop,” Bowen argued in Thursday’s episode.

“That you just were an excessive amount of and being good meant staying inside limits – literally and figuratively. Holding tight. Holding every little thing tight. And that is my attitude, it was tense. And by the way in which, it isn’t funny. It isn’t a fun option to live,” she added.
Looking back, the ‘Blissful Gilmore’ star thinks she struggled with puberty and ‘didn’t like that feeling of change’. She said she had come to the ability to get help.
“We didn’t speak about anything and it just felt … dirty,” she said of taking good care of her body. “And I spotted that while you’re really ravenous, you haven’t any feelings. It’s amazing. The body says, “We do not have time for this.” So I believe it was a coping mechanism.”

Bowen also recalled the “nasty” way the media scrutinized her body just months after she gave birth to twins in 2009.
“I was lucky enough to get some fame and recognition before everyone had mobile phones of their pockets and cameras on a regular basis,” she laughed before sharing a horrific example.
“I gave birth to twins in 2009 and was in Hawaii. We were shooting Modern Family. It was lower than a 12 months later and I still had baby goo,” recalls Bowen.
“I was working. I was breastfeeding after which my husband and I jumped into the ocean in a bikini – nobody was around – and by the point we got to the room the paparazzi were hiding within the rocks somewhere and that was the worst. Like, ‘What’s mistaken along with her? it’s cool.'”
