A pregnant Thai woman has been accused of a series of fatal cyanide poisonings which have shocked the country.
Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, 36, was arrested in late April and initially charged with one count of premeditated murder following the death of her friend Siriporn Kanwong, who collapsed shortly after meeting the suspect on the pier.
But Bangkok police have since requested arrest warrants for 14 more alleged murder cases, 13 of which have already been approved and one remains to be pending, Deputy National Police Commissioner Gen. Surachate Hakparn said at a news conference last week: reports CNN.
Sararat, who’s 4 months pregnant with her third child, is suspected of poisoning at the least 15 people, 14 of whom died and one survived, using “herbal” pills containing cyanide.
She denied any wrongdoing.
“We’ve got evidence that links her to [cyanide]police colonel Anek Thaosuparp said, adding that she can have accessed the poison through a pharmacy run by her older sister.
Police said those that died were known to Sararat and included friends, an ex-boyfriend and cops. They said her motive can have been financial, in line with broadcaster Thai PBS.
“She was asking people she knows for money because she has quite a bit of bank card debt… and in the event that they asked her for a reimbursement, she began killing them off,” Surachate said.
