Remembrance Day air travel surpassed pre-Covid levels, showing how consumers proceed to spend money on travel despite persistent inflation.
The Transportation Security Administration screened 9.79 million people from Friday to Monday, a slight increase from the 2019 holiday weekend. Friday’s inspection of a complete of greater than 2.7 million people was a post-pandemic record, the agency said.
The beginning of the height tourist season is crucial for airlines as they test travelers’ appetite to proceed paying for holidays and other travel, while higher rates of interest and high food and lodging costs strain household budgets.
Last yr, bad weather combined with staff shortages and other stresses led to a rise in flight disruptions in the course of the peak period. Airline executives were optimistic about their carriers’ ability to operate reliably this summer.
Relatively clear weather helped air travel over the weekend, with 16% of flights arriving late from Friday to Monday, in response to FlightAware, a flight tracking website. Delays have decreased since last yr’s holiday weekend.
