Former billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried was forced to use a hose and cold water to take a shower while in a Bahamian prison, which the accused crypto tycoon said was “like ‘The Shawshank Redemption'”.
Bankman-Fried, who was detained by law enforcement officials in the Bahamas on December 12, said he was forced to shower in a moldy cubicle during his transient stay in a small 20-square-foot room at Nassau’s infamous Fox Hill Detention Center.
“I believed it was going to be something like The Shawshank Redemption.” Bankman-Fried, 30, he told Forbesreferring to the Oscar-winning 1994 film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
Within the film, Robbins’ character Andy Dufresne is shipped to a prison where he and other inmates are routinely beaten, raped and in some cases killed by fellow inmates and guards – all under the watchful eye of a corrupt warden.
Nevertheless, Bankman-Fried avoided the hazards of getting to take care of the remaining of the population in a prison that human rights organizations say is stuffed with vermin, mice and cockroaches. His 10-day imprisonment was held in a hospital with five other prisoners.

He was also afforded the posh of using his own ambulatory bathroom, which had a door but the bathroom didn’t flush by itself, forcing him to use a bucket of water on each trip.
The rare time he showered was under a cold water hose and he was forced to wipe his hands and face with a 3-by-5-inch towel, according to Forbes.
The founding father of FTX told Forbes that his sleeping arrangement is “the worst possible bed possible, fabricated from cardboard and a piece of semi-soft plastic on stilts.”
There have been no pillows available, so Bankman-Fried tucked up the navy blue jacket he wore on his court appearances and used it to lower his head at night.
He also didn’t get his usual vegan food regimen, according to Forbes, as an alternative contenting himself with peanut butter, stale wonder bread and fresh fruit.

Nevertheless, unlike Dufresne, Bankman-Fried told Forbes that he never felt threatened by the opposite inmates with whom he shared the infirmary.
Bankman-Fried said the prisoners were mostly imprisoned for drug-related crimes. They reportedly told him that drug dealing was thrice more lucrative than getting cash at McDonald’s.
He described to Forbes the tense moments leading up to his dramatic arrest. Bankman-Fried said he was on the phone together with his Recent York lawyer who was relaying a message from the FBI.
The office informed attorney Bankman-Fried that Bahamian police were on their way to arrest his client. The feds said the fallen founding father of FTX had to make a choice from waiting for local cops to catch him or agreeing to be extradited to the US on “certain bail conditions,” according to Forbes.
Had Bankman-Fried extradited, the FBI would have stopped the Bahamian cops and taken him into custody. According to Forbes, he would then be taken and placed on a private jet certain for the mainland inside hours.

But Bankman-Fried wasn’t convinced his arrest was imminent, so he had his parents call top Bahamian government officials in hopes of confirming the tip, Forbes reported.
Not one of the officials summoned by Bankman-Frieds claimed to pay attention to any arrest.
“They don’t have any fucking idea what that is about,” a source close to Bankman-Fried told Forbes.
“They think it’s apocryphal… and that the US doesn’t understand that they don’t have any power here… If we were going to arrest you, we’d have done it a month ago,” a source told Forbes.
Bankman-Fried says the arrest was a part of an “organized pressure campaign” by the U.S. Department of Justice to get Bahamian authorities to apprehend him before he has a probability to escape.
A cable sent from the DOJ to the Bahamas Attorney General’s office two days before the arrest read: “Legislatively obtained evidence and various witness interviews indicate that Bankman-Fried has personally amassed billions of dollars from his involvement in a criminal conspiracy: thus he has the means and can soon have a motive to flee the Bahamas.”

The Post asked for a comment from spokesman Bankman-Fried.
Bankman-Fried initially fought extradition but eventually relented. He pleaded not guilty to fraud and money laundering charges before being released on $250 million bail pending trial in Lower Manhattan this fall.
Bankman-Fried is currently under house arrest in $4 million value of Palo Alto, California. at the house of his parents, Stanford law professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried.
He denied allegations that he defrauded FTX investors and clients by diverting $1.8 billion invested in the platform to his hedge fund. If convicted, he faces up to 115 years behind bars.

According to Forbes, the Bankman-Fried family hired armed private security guards and bought a trained German Shepherd that may attack on command with a secret password.
