This original and humorous spin exposes the complex and colourful past of certainly one of America’s most beloved mystery seekers.”
Gwen Ihnat, The Wrap’s film critic, said it “appeared like an important idea” to “construct up on long-held speculations about [Velma’s] sexuality.
But she added, “You’ve got to wonder where in the event of ‘Velma’ every part went so horribly improper?” Ihnat complained of “senseless nudity, gratuitous violence and cruelty”. Indeed, the primary episode of the series begins with the brutal murder of a highschool student and “cutting out her brain from an oozing corpse.”
Variety also desired to just like the show’s contemporary tendencies, praising the importance of Velma’s “still-forming teenage queer identity”.
