James Cameron says ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is the most ’empowering’ film for ladies so far – because of the sight of a pregnant warrior.
The upcoming film picks up a decade from where the original left off, with the story of the Sully clan training to develop into warriors as they begin a family – and Cameron has decided Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) will probably be pregnant.
“Everybody’s all the time talking about women’s empowerment,” Cameron told Robert Rodriguez Variety directors about directors series. “But what is a lot of a lady’s life that we men don’t experience? And I assumed, “Well, in case you’re really going to go all the way down the female initiation rabbit hole, let’s take a female fighter who is six months pregnant in battle.” “
The 68-year-old director explained that the character’s pregnancy is intended to interrupt stereotypes that expectant women are incapable and powerless, and to indicate a society where women must fight to survive.

“It doesn’t occur in our society – it probably hasn’t happened in lots of of years. But I guarantee you that in those days, women needed to fight to survive and protect their children, and it didn’t matter in the event that they were pregnant. And pregnant women are more capable of being fitter than we as a culture admit. I assumed, “Let’s eliminate real borders.” For me, it was the last bastion that can not be seen,” he said.
Cameron also claimed that this film shows women’s empowerment higher than Marvel.
“Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel – all the other amazing women show up but they are not mothers and they are not pregnant after they’re fighting evil,” he said.
Kate Winslet, who plays Ronal in the sequel, defended Cameron for creating “female” roles which have “balance”.

“Jim [Cameron] she’s so amazing at creating roles for ladies who’re each strong, measurable, and physically fit, and I actually admire that. It’s something we obviously need more of, and we have been talking about it for years,” Winslet, 47, told Total Movies magazine. by Game Radar.
“But the thing is, Jim was do it for years: He has been creating great roles for ladies for years. There are more female leads than male leads in his movies, and that is really, really vital and really inspiring,” continues the producer of The Easttown Mares.
Avatar: The Way of Water opens in theaters on Friday, December 16.
