New York is taking an aggressive approach to cleansing up town, including hiring a “black rat” to cope with the growing rodent population. Now the Sanitary Department has issued a report proposing “garbage containerization”, which might introduce “rodent-proof” waste containers.
Garbage containerization goals to cut back the rat population by cutting off food sources – as residents can be required to place their waste in airtight containers, not in garbage bags on the road.
In accordance with the report, the bins could be installed on 89% of town’s residential streets. Nevertheless, there are trade-offs: it might mean eliminating almost 150,000 parking spaces.
