In response to scientists in Japan, acupuncture on the outer ear reduces weight, relieves hunger and lowers the body mass index.
However the acupuncture technique used in this study doesn’t require needles. As a substitute, small metal beads are attached to the outer ear with surgical tape.
“Because these tiny metal beads are attached to 6 points on the outer ear that stimulate the nerves and appetite-regulating organs … this kind of acupuncture doesn’t require any complex knowledge or skill,” Dr. Takahiro Fujimoto of Tokyo’s F Clinic said in a news release.
“In Japan, this approach to weight loss has been used for over 30 years.”
The study, presented at European Congress on Obesity 2023 at a gathering in Dublin, Ireland, 81 obese or obese men were followed for 3 months. Along with placing acupuncture beads on each ears (generally known as auricular acupuncture), the boys kept food diaries and were asked to chop their food intake in half.
After three months, the boys lost a median of 4 inches from their waistline and reduced their body fat percentage by 4%. The average BMI amongst study participants also dropped by almost 3 points. There was no control group, and the researchers noted that the study was limited by the small variety of participants and the short duration of the study. As well as, scientists cannot conclusively prove that weight loss was on account of acupuncture.
“Our findings suggest that ear acupuncture may help with weight loss when combined with weight loss plan and exercise,” said Fujimoto. “Probably, acupuncture has a positive effect by curbing hunger and cravings, improving digestion and speeding up metabolism.”
It just isn’t known exactly how this acupuncture method works, however the technique relies on the idea that health is regulated by the flow of energy throughout the body. Ear acupuncture may help balance the endocrine system, reduce appetite, and decelerate the body’s metabolic rate.
This is not the primary time auricular acupuncture has been studied for weight loss: A A 2015 study published in the journal BMJ Open Gastroenterology with 10 participants found significant weight loss amongst study participants who received ear acupuncture.
in 2020 study published in the journal OBM Integrative and Complementary MedicineFujimoto achieved weight loss results amongst women just like those found amongst men in a newer study. As well as, the ladies’s weight loss was maintained for six months after the top of treatment.
Acupuncture has been used for hundreds of years in Asia to treat dozens of conditions, including digestive disorders, sexual dysfunction, drug addiction, and pain from arthritis, headaches, and other disorders.
Recent studies show that acupuncture also can help women with loss of sexual energy, ease the suffering of those with COVID-19, and even provide a fast awakening to drowsy people.
