The Writers Guild of America is reported to have rejected a request to waive permission to broadcast the 2023 Tony Awards as scheduled on June 11 due to the ongoing writers’ strike.
Hollywood reporter announced Friday that the tv broadcast of the theater’s biggest night is not going to be aired on CBS i broadcast on Paramount+ according to the unique plan.
The Post contacted Tonys and WGA representatives for comment.
This season’s Tony awards management committee asked the Writers Guild for such a waiver earlier this week, highlighting that financially struggling Broadway shows depend on Tony’s exposure to boost ticket sales.
Shows hoping to grow include ‘Kimberly Akimbo’, ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Leopoldstadt’.
The Tonys management committee reportedly set a gathering for Monday to determine between two options: keep the June 11 non-television date and invite nominees and media to a dinner or press conference, or reschedule the show until the strike ends and the awards be televised.
The Writers Guild of America – an alliance of two unions representing greater than 11,000 film, TV, news, radio and online writers – went on strike May 2.
