When Chris Licht took over as CNN’s CEO last yr, he made a promise to viewers.
“An analogy I like to use is a few people like rain, some people do not like rain. We should always give it a spot. But we’re not going to have someone are available in and say it is not raining,” Licht told CNBC in October.
Licht spoke of CNN guests and panelists promoting disinformation, comparable to election fraud, when he commented.
CNN will welcome former President Donald Trump to City Hall on Wednesday. It seems Licht is bending his own rules. Apparently, CNN has a special standard for Trump than the Trump spokespeople who go through cable news networks as each day visitors.
Trump has repeatedly made false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him. A whole lot of his supporters violently attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 to prevent Congress from confirming Joe Biden’s victory after being told by Trump in a speech “For those who don’t fight like hell, you will not have a rustic anymore.”
CNN promised to hold Trump accountable at City Hall.
“President Trump is a Republican leader and our job, despite his unique circumstances, is to do what we do best,” a spokesman told CNN. “Ask the hard questions, track and hold him accountable to give voters the data they need to structure their decisions.”
Trump’s invitation to CNN
Discovery Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav and board member John Malone were opened at their belief that CNN needs to be less an “advocacy network” and more a news network than what they believed to be when Jeff Zucker was in power in the course of the Trump years as president.
“He needs to be,” Zaslav told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday when asked about Trump’s admission to City Hall. “He’s the Republican favorite. It have to be turned on.”
CNN opts for live coverage of City Hall over a pre-recorded interview with Trump, which might then be checked before airing. This may be a safer plan of action, but City Hall Live will likely bring higher rankings to CNN, which has been bleeding spectators as a part of program changes.
During his presidency, Trump heavily skewed his media appearances towards Republican Fox News. Participated in NBC City Hall hosted by Savannah Guthrie in October 2020.
CNN is taking notes of the event in preparation for Trump, according to people conversant in the matter. Guthrie has consistently questioned Trump for his penchant for spreading false information, tell him in some unspecified time in the future “You are the president, not someone’s crazy uncle.”
CNN Town Hall shall be hosted by Kaitlan Collins, who co-hosts CNN’s recent morning show. Collins was CNN’s chief White House correspondent in the course of the Trump administration.
“We now have divided the federal government. We want to hear each voices,” Zaslav told CNBC on Friday. “Republicans are on CNN and Democrats are on CNN. All voices needs to be heard on CNN.”
